Upgrades could push Islanders into playoff mix

For more than four decades, the New York Islanders have called Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum home. The 2014-15 season will be their last at the outdated facility on Hempstead Turnpike; the Islanders will be moving into Barclays Center in Brooklyn next fall.

And that's just one of several changes on the horizon.

Team owner Charles Wang is in the process of entering into a new partnership. The Islanders announced Aug. 19 that a group led by former Washington Capitals co-owner Jon Ledecky and London-based investor Scott Malkin reached an agreement, subject to pas cher nike Chaussures NHL approval, to purchase a substantial minority interest in the team. Under the terms of the agreement, Wang will continue as majority shareholder and governor of the Islanders, with the Ledecky/Malkin group transitioning to majority ownership in two years.

After failing to qualify for the Stanley Cup Playoffs for the sixth time in seven seasons, changes were made to Jack Capuano's coaching staff. Assistant coach Brent Thompson is returning to the Bridgeport Sound Tigers to be the team's head coach. Greg Cronin, who has been an assistant with the Toronto Maple Leafs the past three seasons, was hired by the Islanders in the same capacity on June 16.

This will be Cronin's second stint in New York; he was an Islanders assistant from 1999-2003. Cronin will be one of three assistant coaches, joining Doug Weight (who was also barato nike zapatos promoted to assistant general manager), Bob Corkum and Matt Bertani.

Several changes were also made to the on-ice product. Goaltending, which was a major issue for the Islanders last season, has been addressed. New York acquired the rights to Jaroslav Halak from the Washington Capitals on May 1 and signed him to a four-year contract three weeks later. Halak will be joined by Chad Johnson, a more-than-capable backup.

Looking to add more offense and alleviate some pressure from superstar captain John Tavares, the Islanders signed center Mikhail Grabovski and right wing Nikolai Kulemin on July 2. The two combined for 59 goals while playing on the same line in Toronto in 2010-11, and the hope is they will rekindle that magic in New York.

Tavares is healthy after a knee injury at the 2014 Sochi Olympics forced him to miss the remainder of last season. With the emergence of Kyle Okposo cheap nike air max 2014 (69 points in 71 games), a more balanced offensive attack and improved goaltending, the pressure will be on general manager Garth Snow and the Islanders to find their way back to the postseason.

"You play to win and you play to win the Stanley Cup," Tavares said. "That's been our goal, for a lot of us since we were kids to have that opportunity. After a great year we had during the lockout season we were really disappointed with it last year. This is a big year for us in a lot of ways. You can see Garth and management really trying to find that solution to get us into the playoffs and consistently have that. The pressure is great. You have to enjoy it. It just means there's a great opportunity ahead of you."

Tavares and Okposo clearly make up two-thirds of the top line, but the Islanders enter training camp with an open competition on the left wing. The belief is that Brock Nelson, a first-round pick (No. 30) at the 2010 NHL Draft who scored 14 goals as a cheap fendi belts rookie last season, will receive the first crack. Ryan Strome was taken fifth in 2011 and will also likely get a look because of New York's sudden abundance of offensive centers.

The Islanders also used their first-round pick at the 2014 draft on a left wing, selecting Michael Dal Colle from the Oshawa Generals in the Ontario Hockey League. Dal Colle, 18, had 95 points (39 goals, 56 assists) in 67 games last season, but will likely be returned to the junior level for more seasoning.

"We're going to try some things in preseason, there's no question," Capuano said.

Grabovski and Kulemin are expected to skate on the second line, perhaps cheap nike air max shoes alongside Strome. The Islanders went 21-11-5 when Strome was in the lineup last season, and his ability to make plays could be an intriguing option for Capuano. Josh Bailey, who possesses plenty of skill but has yet to put it all together offensively at the NHL level, is another possibility.

"Personally, I'm just happy [to] find a good team, and sign the long deal," Grabovski told the team website. "Then I can stay and just enjoy playing and relax. It's a great city, and it'll be a great chance to play next year in [the] new stadium."

Grabovski's arrival allows Frans Nielsen to center the third line cheap jordan shoes and makes the Islanders one of the deeper teams down the middle in the Metropolitan Division. Nielsen, 30, set career highs last season in goals (25), assists (33) and points (58).

Some pundits believe the Islanders' blue line corps still isn't good enough to get them into the playoffs, but Calvin de Haan, a first-round pick (No. 12) in 2009, emerged last season and averaged 21:01 of ice time per game. Now that Andrew MacDonald is a member of the Philadelphia Flyers, de Haan will receive even more ice time this season as long as he continues to progress.

He will likely be paired with the team's anchor on defense, Travis Hamonic. The 24-year-old averaged 25 minutes per game last season.

It is crucial for the Islanders that Lubomir Visnovsky remains cheap oakley sunglasses healthy. The 38-year-old was limited to 24 games last season because of a concussion, and his veteran leadership and ability to quarterback the power play were sorely missed.

Visnovsky could be paired with Griffin Reinhart, provided the latter impresses enough in training camp to secure a roster spot. Reinhart, the Islanders' first-round pick (No. 4) in 2012, is coming off a Memorial Cup championship with the Edmonton Oil Kings in the Western Hockey League. The 6-foot-4, 217-pound defenseman is eager to begin his NHL career.

"I want to show them I can play here," Reinhart said. "Not just fit in, but make an impact. I want to show them I can play at the pro level in the NHL first cheap gucci bags and [I'm going to] work really hard in practices to show them that I want to be here. I plan on doing the drills right, not taking any shortcuts and just doing things the right way."

New York's third pairing will likely consist of Thomas Hickey, a waiver-wire acquisition in 2013 who continues to make strides, and T.J. Brennan, who signed as a free agent this summer. Brennan, 25, had 72 points (25 goals, 47 assists) in 76 games for the Toronto Marlies in the American Hockey League last season and provides insurance on the power play if Visnovsky is unable to stay healthy.

New York simply didn't get the goaltending it needed to compete for a playoff spot last season, but Halak arrives armed with a four-year contract and eager to cheap nike shoes for sale build off the success he had in nearly four seasons with the St. Louis Blues.

In 40 games for St. Louis last season, Halak went 24-9-4 with a 2.23 goals-against average and .917 save percentage. He played a career-high 57 games for the Blues in 2010-11 and should expect a similar workload with the Islanders.

Halak will be joined by another newcomer in Johnson. The 28-year-old had an outstanding season with the Boston Bruins as Tuukka Rask's backup; in 27 games, Johnson went 17-4-3 with a 2.10 goals-against average and .925 save percentage.

"I've always said it's good to have two good goalies and really good competition between each other," Halak said shortly after arriving on Long Island a couple of weeks ago. "They push each other in practices and games. Obviously whoever plays better, that goalie should play. We'll see how it's going to work out, but obviously I'm going to do my best every day and every practice.

"They have a young team and a great group of guys over here. They are only going to get better. I was glad that they traded for me and showed good interest in me. I'm happy cheap ebay online to be here and thrilled about training camp and the start of the season."

Lack of discipline hurts Canada in loss to Czechs

MONTREAL -- Canada's biggest weakness at the IIHF World Junior Championship has generally been a lack of discipline, or at least an inability to adjust to the standards of international officials.

Coach Benoit Groulx has been clear throughout Canada's summer development camp this week that no one will make the team or get cut in August, but the final scrimmage of the camp against the Czech Republic cheap nike air max 2014 on Friday might have hurt the chances of some players because of their inability to maintain discipline.

With the Czechs leading 5-2 in the third period, Canada took 11 minor penalties, one major penalty and four misconducts during the final 13:40 of the game in its only loss of the four-game exhibition tournament that also included Russia.

The parade to the penalty box was triggered by an open-ice hit from Czech defenseman Marek Baranek on Canada forward Robby Fabbri at 6:20 of the third period, one that knocked the St. Louis Blues prospect out of the game and forced him to leave the arena on crutches.

"What we just saw is not the way we want to play," a disappointed Groulx cheap fendi belts said following the 5-2 loss. "It's a good lesson that we can take from this game, and it taught something to us as coaches from what we saw from certain players."

Groulx didn't name anyone in particular, but one look at the scoresheet gives an idea of who he meant.

Anaheim Ducks prospect Nick Ritchie was given a minor and a misconduct for a hit to the head at 4:04 of the third period, then was assessed a fighting major, an instigating minor and was ejected from the game after he repeatedly punched the head of Czech defenseman Lukas Klok well after the final buzzer. Klok hit Canada defenseman Aaron Ekblad, cheap nike air max shoes the top pick in the 2014 NHL Draft by the Florida Panthers, in a game Tuesday and gave him a concussion, ending his camp.

Arizona Coyotes forward prospect Max Domi was given a minor penalty and a misconduct for a check to the head 1:20 after the hit on Fabbri, and Calgary Flames prospect Sam Bennett was assessed a roughing misconduct at 12:40 of the third coming to the defense of center Connor McDavid, the top prospect for the 2015 draft.

"It's too bad the way we responded in the third period," Groulx said. "But it's a training camp, we've learned a lot from our players and I think that's a lesson we have to learn today about how to respond. Even cheap nike shoes though you're tired and it's tough and the game's not going your way, this is adversity. We wanted to see how some guys would respond in adversity. We're very happy with some guys' response, and disappointed with other guys' response. This is why we're having a training camp."

In a tournament like the WJC, where a loss of concentration in an elimination game can be disastrous, episodes like what Canada showed Friday are something Groulx and Hockey Canada head scout Ryan Jankowski will be looking to avoid.

Philadelphia Flyers defense prospect Samuel Morin was another player who spent a lot of time in the penalty box Friday. He was assessed four minors, including one for slashing just after leaving the box for the roughing cheap oakley sunglasses minor he was assessed for challenging Baranek following his hit on Fabbri.

Morin had an excellent camp by all accounts, showing remarkable mobility for a player who is 6-foot-7, but Groulx was not impressed with what he saw from the defenseman Friday.

"I thought he had a good camp," Groulx said. "But at a certain point, that's not what we want to see. That can't happen on the world stage. It's a lesson for him, and not only for Samuel Morin but for the team and cheap gucci bags for other guys also."

The problem for Morin, and for several of the Canadian players, is the style of play that gets them in trouble in international tournaments is oftentimes the primary source of their success and the reason they were drafted to begin with. To turn off that aggressive instinct when representing their country at the highest level of junior hockey can sometimes be difficult.

"I got drafted in the NHL, so for some it's a weakness and for others it's a strength. But I need to be careful with that. Sometimes I do the same thing and I'm not in the penalty box, other games I am. I need to be careful," said Morin, who was being watched in the stands by Flyers GM Ron Hextall on Friday. "We need to adjust to the refereeing. We won't cheap nike shoes for sale see the same calls with European refs; they can be more strict than we are in North America. So we just need to adjust. I think the whole team was frustrated at the end."

In another sense, several of the players felt proud of the way they went after the Czechs following the hit on Fabbri, seeing it as a sign of solidarity and team-building to defend a fallen teammate.

"I thought we came together as a team, we didn't back down and we stuck up for each other really well," said Vancouver Canucks forward prospect Bo Horvat, who wore the captain's "C" in the game. "I thought we came together really well. In a short period of time we were like a family, and everyone stuck up for each other."

Canada enters the 2015 World Junior Championship having gone two years without a medal knockoff nfl jerseys and five straight years without a gold medal. With the tournament on home ice in Toronto and Montreal, the pressure to snap both those streaks in one swoop will be enormous.

That pressure might force players to snap, just as they did Friday. If Groulx needed an example of what happens when "sticking up for each other" simply turns into a total lack of discipline and composure, he got a great one against the Czechs to close out camp.

"You can't have a better example than that," Groulx said. "As I said all week, this is the beginning of a long [selection] process, but [discipline] is something we're going to look at closely. The reaction of cheap nike shoes free shipping our players tonight, mentally we felt we had pushed in the second to get back in the game, but once it became 5-2 in the third it was more difficult.

"This is why we organized this camp, to have the players face some adversity. Today, we didn't get the response we wanted, that's for sure."

Extra rest before opener helping Bruins get healthy

BOSTON -- Although it has been a long wait for the Boston Bruins to begin the Stanley Cup Playoffs against the Detroit Red Wings, the extra time off until Game 1 of their Eastern Conference First Round series Friday at TD Garden (7:30 p.m. ET; NBCSN, TSN, FS-D, NESN) has allowed the Bruins to get healthier.

Injuries and a flu bug had ravaged the Bruins' roster earlier cheap jordan shoes in the week. Boston got healthier on Thursday with the return of rookie defenseman Kevan Miller for practice at the Garden. However, defenseman Matt Bartkowski (undisclosed), and forwards Chris Kelly (back) and Daniel Paille (head), remained off the ice.

Bruins coach Claude Julien revealed little about the missing players' status or availability for Game 1.

"I don't know that it's official yet on any of that stuff. Again, [Thursday] was another day where we had another player [back], so we'll see what [Friday] brings," Julien said. "It's hard for me to start giving you my lineup cheap football jerseys when I don't know what's going to happen day to day. So hopefully it continues to improve, which it has this week, and then we'll go from there."

Earlier in the week, the Bruins were without seven players for practice. A few players returned Wednesday and then Miller came back Thursday. Despite the disruptions to his roster, Julien said he and his staff were able to get the Bruins prepared for the Red Wings.

"It's created a bit of a challenge, there's no doubt.cheap oakley sunglasses You know we could've started certain things a little earlier, but we had to wait for players to get back, and so on and so forth," Julien said. "But we got everything accomplished. We just had to kind of move things around a little bit. And as you saw, the first practice with three lines, five Ds, didn't give us a chance to work on too much.

"I thought [Wednesday] we did a lot. And again [Thursday], we just wanted to touch up certain things of our game. And right now it's about really getting ready for Game 1. You know as much as it was a challenge, in my mind we've managed to do what we wanted to. So hopefully it doesn't set us back for Game 1."

The Bruins-Red Wings series will be the last to get underway.

"Sometimes it's a negative just sitting around waiting too much," cheap nike shoes free shipping forward Milan Lucic said. "But on the other hand, sometimes it gives you the opportunity to get a little extra rest. Obviously we know how the schedule was, especially after the Olympic break and having some guys that went to the Olympics, it gives them a little extra time to get that little bit of extra break that they need in order to recover for this playoff series. So you know what, in the end I know we're all excited and that's the main thing."

Penguins prepared to adjust lines to create matchups

PITTSBURGH -- The Pittsburgh Penguins lines could remain flexible throughout their Stanley Cup Playoff series against the Columbus Blue Jackets.

Game 2 of the Eastern Conference First Round will take place at cheap football jerseys Consol Energy Center on Saturday (7 p.m. ET; NBCSN, CBC, RDS, FS-O, ROOT).

Pittsburgh made several line adjustments during its 4-3 win in Game 1 on Wednesday, primarily to the wings on three of its lines. The Penguins swapped forwards Tanner Glass, who began the game as the third-line left wing, and Brian Gibbons under certain circumstances.

Entering the game, Pittsburgh planned to use Glass on the third line to match up against Blue Jackets forward Ryan Johansen's line and create a checking line. Gibbons was used to provide more speed to the line in an attempt to boost its offensive production.

Penguins coach Dan Bylsma said forwards Brandon Sutter and Lee Stempniak can be expected to play at third-line center and right wing, respectively.

Forward Beau Bennett, who played first-line right wing to begin the game, cheap nike shoes for sale also played left wing on the third line. Sutter's game-winning goal was assisted by Bennett and defenseman Paul Martin.

With Bennett on the third line, Gibbons played with forwards Sidney Crosby and Chris Kunitz in a role he filled leading to the 2014 NHL Trade Deadline. Bylsma said similarities between Gibbons and forward Pascal Dupuis, who had season-ending ACL surgery, have led to Gibbons' opportunities with the first line.

"Flat-out, straight-away speed, I don't know where Brian would rank in the League, but I think he's the fastest guy on our team," Bylsma said. "Sid's a player that likes and needs his line and his linemates cheap nike shoes free shipping to force the other team with their speed and with getting on defensemen and being able to read off of that and read where the puck is going to go because of that speed.

"You see that with Pascal, and you certainly see that with Brian Gibbons as well."

Despite their Game 1 win, the Penguins were not satisfied with their performance. Defenseman Kris Letang had a disappointing outing after playing well in three games since returning from a stroke suffered in late January.

Letang committed two turnovers, one that led to a shorthanded goal by forward Derek MacKenzie, and two penalties, including a retaliatory slash against forward Boone Jenner in the second period and an interference call that cut a Pittsburgh power play short 11:33 into the third period.

"Kris is a guy that's targeted. I think going into a series, there are certain guys on the opposition that you're looking to put a dent on and go after and get a forecheck on and be physical, cheap nike shoes and Kris is one of those," Bylsma said. "I didn't like the response from Kris on the penalty he took on Jenner there and I think he got a message. Whether it was a voice, or not playing or a talk, he got a message.

"That's something he's got to be better at, and that's something we have to be better at, as a group."

After taking Thursday off, the Penguins will return to practice Friday morning cheap jordan shoes. The Blue Jackets returned to Columbus for an optional practice Thursday, in which injured forward Nick Foligno participated.

NFL to consider reseeding playoffs purely by record

Both NFC matchups on Wild Card Weekend feature teams with the superior record going on the road.

NFL owners have taken notice of the inequity.
Among the "multiple ways" in which the NFL has examined potential adjustments to the playoff system, spokesman Brian McCarthy said Thursday there has been discussion of letting the team cheap jordan shoes with the superior record host games even if they gain entrance to the postseason as a wild card.

"Every scenario has been discussed, ranging from reseeding to one extra game, expanding from 12 to 14 teams," McCarthy said. "Think of a scenario, it's been discussed and remains in play."

A potential holdup is that some clubs have "raised the concern that reseeding would minimize the value of winning a division; winning a division now means a guaranteed home playoff game."

This is a relatively new issue for the NFL. From the 1989 season through 2001 season cheap nike shoes free shipping, only three home teams with inferior records hosted playoff games. Over the past seven years, however, at least one team with a superior record has been forced to go on the road.

This weekend's games will raise the total to 15 such matchups over that seven-year span.

Home teams have enjoyed a .575 winning percentage cheap nike shoes during the Super Bowl era, according to STATS. That figure jumps to .675 during the playoffs.New Orleans coach Sean Payton is the poster child for that homefield advantage. His team is 16-0 at home and 8-8 on the road over his past two seasons.

The Saints are winless in five road playoff games.

They can end that streak by winning in Philadelphia on Saturday night . Of course, that might help convince the competition committee that the need for change is overblown.
